The mathematics and statistics programs at NKU are designed to graduate professionals who are critical thinkers. Statistics is the science of reasoning from data, whether those data come from biology, economics, healthcare, sports, psychology, marketing, or other fields. Statisticians often help search for clues to the solution of a scientific mystery and sometimes keep investigators from being misled by false impressions.

Education: Statistics Major, Computer Science Minor

Career: Actuarial Analyst at Western & Southern Financial Group

"I think the best thing about the math/stat department has been the ability to prep students for their careers post-graduation. There are plenty of undergraduate research opportunities for us to get more valuable experience than we would from just the classroom, the rigor of classes better prepared me for my career, especially actuarial exams."

Advice to future students: My best advice is to not be in a hurry. I had the opportunity to graduate early, but I think my best choice was to hold off on graduating after the full 4 years. If you worked hard to earn scholarships, it is important to make the most of it and attend all 4 years, regardless of how much you can get done in 3 or 3.5 years. I 'll be graduating with a major in stats and a minor in CS, but in addition, I completed my VEE credits, which required about 30 credit hours of accounting, finance, and econ courses in addition to the 30 to get the CS minor. Also, I am confident that I was able to develop more skills and pass more exams than I would have been able to while working. As much as I may want to graduate now, I don't regret not graduating early!

Memorable experience: The most memorable experience was definitely the summer research project I participated in with Hanna, Conner, MK, Bijay, and Rachel. The project helped me to secure my internship and develop more practical skills based on what I'd already learned in the classroom. It also helped me get to know most of my fellow math/stat majors.

First-Year Experience: The first-year experience gives you the opportunity to:
- Form a community with other mathematics and statistics majors.
- Learn some mathematics and statistics content you'll see in future classes.
- Complete a project in the fall semester and present your work in the spring.
- Receive a one-time $500 scholarship!
Experiential Learning: Many opportunities exist beyond the classroom:

- Tutoring in the Math & Stat Lab
- Statistical consulting in the Burkardt Consulting Center
- Certification in the statistical programming language SAS
- Possible internships with local industries like GE, 84.51, and Western & Southern
Career Explorations: The department supports students in their exploration of post-graduation opportunities. During the junior year, students will:
- Explore post-graduation paths available to those with a mathematics/statistics background including industry positions and graduate programs.
- Meet and network with department alumni through site visits to local industries and graduate programs.
- Develop job search and interview skills.
