WILDER, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women’s
soccer team took a huge step toward securing a first-round home game
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory
over Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night.
The victory avenged
NKU’s
3-2 loss to Missouri-St. Louis in last season’s GLVC Tournament
quarterfinals.
The 24th-ranked Norse (9-2, 5-2 GLVC) maintained
offensive pressure throughout the first half, outshooting Missouri-St.
Louis (4-6-1,
4-2-1 GLVC) by a 7-1 margin. Lauren Franzen provided the difference
maker for the Norse in the 21st minute when Brandi Doss sent a
cross into the box for Ashley Warndorf, who settled the ball to
the senior
for her fourth goal of the season.
Missouri-St.
Louis’ best
opportunity to equalize came with just 40 seconds remaining in
the game. Caitlin Farrow picked up
a long pass from the Missouri-St. Louis defense in stride, a step
behind
the NKU defense for a breakaway. Norse back Kristi Hofmeyer was
not deterred, however, tracking down her opposition and making
a stellar
tackle inside the 18-yard box to thwart the offensive rush.
The
Norse defense controlled the Tritons most of the game, allowing
just two shots to reach NKU goalkeeper Angela Healy. Missouri-St.
Louis goalkeeper Hanna Sayre had four saves on the opposite end.
NKU
wraps up its three-game homestand on Sunday in a matinee against
Southern Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the
Town & Country
Sports Complex. |
