WILDER, Ky.
- Lauren Franzen scored two goals Sunday afternoon as the Northern
Kentucky University women’s soccer team posted a 3-2 win against
Bellarmine in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference
Tournament.
Franzen struck
early, knocking in a shot off a rebound at the 3:30 mark to give
NKU (14-2) a 1-0 lead. Brandi Doss extended the Norse advantage
to 2-0 at the 36:41 mark by finding the back of the net from 17
yards off assists from both Kendall Day and Jessica Page.
Franzen made
it a 3-0 NKU lead less than a minute into the second half by sending
a 15-yard shot past Bellarmine goalie Alison Von Hoene off an assist
from Day. It was the eighth goal of the season for Franzen, a Campbell
County High School graduate.
Bellarmine (11-6-2)
battled back by scoring two goals in the final 14 minutes of regulation.
Lauren Triplett struck at the 76:14 mark, and Amanda More added
a goal just two minutes later to make it 3-2.
NKU’s
defense stiffened after allowing the two goals, and the second-seeded
Norse advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the first time
since 2005.
NKU finished
with a 20-12 advantage in shot attempts, but Bellarmine won the
battle of corner kicks by an 8-6 margin. Norse goalie Angela Healy
recorded five saves in notching the victory.
NKU will travel
to Kenosha, Wis., on Friday to meet Indianapolis at noon (Eastern
time) in the GLVC Tournament semifinals. Top-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside
is the host for the semifinals and championship.
