Welcome to the College of Education and Human Services.
As our world becomes more diverse, we teach those who will continue to make positive change through a number of professions.
College Information
The College of Education and Human Services offers teacher certification programs to undergraduate students in the following areas: Early Childhood (Birth-5 years); Elementary Education (P-5); and Middle Grades Education (5-9). The college also offers Health and Physical Education certification (P-12) as well as P-12 Special Education certification, which must be paired with another education program.
In addition, the college offers secondary teacher education programs in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences in the following certification areas: Art Education (P-12), Biological Science Education (8-12), Chemistry Education (8-12), Earth/ Science Education (8-12), English Education (8-12), Mathematics Education (8-12), Music Education (P-12), Physics Education (8-12), Social Studies Education (8-12), and World Language Education (P-12). The college also collaborates with the College of Business to offer Business Education (5-12).
In addition, the college offers degree programs to undergraduate students in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Social Work, and Counseling/ Human Services.
The College offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program for post-bachelor students interested in becoming certified in a middle grades or secondary teaching area. For certified teachers the college offers a Master of Arts in Education, an Instructional Leadership program, and a post Master’s Rank I program. In addition, the college offers a Counselor Education program at the Master's level in either School Counseling or Community Counseling. The College is also proud to be the first college on the NKU campus to offer a doctorate degree, an Ed.D degree in Educational Leadership.
The College has approximately 70 full-time faculty members and 12 full-time support staff to serve approximately 1700 undergraduate majors and 600 graduate majors. The College also provides a variety of innovative outreach programs to the community through its collaboration with P-12 schools and community agencies.
The College of Education and Human Services is organized into five components: (1) the Dean’s office including the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs; (2) the Advising Center which serves the undergraduate students, (3) the Department of Teacher Education which houses the IECE, elementary, middle grades, special education, and secondary education programs, as well as the MAT program; (4) the Department of Kinesiology and Health which houses the athletic training, exercise science, health and physical education programs, and (5) the Department of Counseling, Social Work, and Leadership which houses the social work and counseling/human services programs, as well as the Counselor Education and Educational Leadership programs, which includes the Ed.D. program.
Accreditations, Affiliations, & Memberships
The teacher education programs in the College of Education and Human Services at Northern Kentucky University is accredited by NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7490). This accreditation covers initial and advanced teacher preparation programs. The College is also a member of the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), and the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities (TECSCU).
In addition, the Athletic Training program is accredited by CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) and the Social Work program is accredited by CSWE (Council of Social Work Education).
