Taking Tests in My Classes
Strategy:
-
- Look over the test -
- Decide which are the easiest and attack those first.
-
- Attempt all problems -
- Even the sketch of an approach is worth some partial credit.
-
- Read each problem carefully -
- You'd be amazed sometimes at how little correlation there is between what is called for, and what is actually done!
-
- Look for the easy solution first -
- I like to give some problems that are easy if you really understand what's going on, and painful (if not impossible!) otherwise.
-
- Know when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em -
- Don't spend too much time on any one problem (unless you're moving along steadily and surely toward the solution). You can come back later, if need be.
-
- Don't erase (unless it's flat out wrong, and you know it)! -
- I've often given points for material that's been erased (but not completely obscured) from a student's paper: it was right, but the student lost confidence. I assign partial credit based upon your work, but I need to see your work to give partial credit!
-
- Ask me! -
- You're free to ask me questions -- I may not answer them, but I might be able to give you a hint, a nod, or something....
