Cells and Tissues
Below is a review of cells and tissues using close-ups of the tongue cross section slide.

A. Epithelial tissue: covers the surfaces of of the body. Stained purple in this slide.

B. Nervous tissue: used in sensory organs. Located here in the taste buds (indicated by the arrows in the labeled photo).

C. Connective tissue: Connects tissues and organs. See above between the folds of epithelial tissue, and in the labeled photo between the epithelial and the muscle tissues. Stained pale purple in this slide.

D. Muscle tissue: Used for movement. Stained pink here.


** The dark purple tissue intermixed with the muscles is glandular tissue. You aren't required to recognize this.
