Ceilidh Ahearn: Pursuing a Bright Future in Biochemistry

By Andrea Carter
Office of the Dean, College of Arts & Sciences

For biochemistry major Ceilidh Ahearn (pronounced 'kay-lee'), the chance for practical hands-on experience was the central driving force behind her decision to get involved in research.

Ceilidh, a freshman at the time, was instantly drawn to idea of participating in a research after hearing multiple professors discuss their studies in class.

Naturally, she began to ask these professors specifics pertaining to their research.

Her inquisitive approach paid off when she was invited by chemistry professor Dr. Patrick Hare to join his research group. She has since continued her work with the group.

Ceilidh’s work essentially revolves around what occurs to compounds when they are broken apart by exposure to UV light- a process known as photolyzing.

Because of her involvement with research, Ceilidh has become more familiar with using various types of equipment. She has also been able to hone some other career skills, such as mastering Microsoft Excel.

Though she still has two years left as an undergraduate, Ceilidh aspires to attend medical school and pursue a PhD in biochemistry.

However, her interests expand far beyond the realm of biochemistry. Ceilidh considers herself an avid archer as well as the proud owner of Rosco- her beloved pet bearded dragon.
