Justen Mamaril:Persistence is in His Genes

By Emily Warpool,
Dean's Office College of Arts & Sciences

If research has taught Chemistry major Justen Mamaril anything, it is that research takes persistence and dedication – something that has become evident to Justen through his ongoing project in genetic modification.

Senior Justen Mamaril began his studies in the biochemistry track with Dr. Gemene as a part of the UR-STEM program, an Undergraduate Research program for STEM majors that takes place throughout the Summer, aiming to give undergraduates hands-on research experience. After his experience with the URSTEM program, Justen reached out to Dr. Michael Guy with a request to join his research group, where he became interested in the subject of genetic modification.

Justen’s main goal through his research is to develop a technique that will be able to identify if a piece of RNA has been modified by the cell. This technique will use a process called reverse transcription. When completed, this technique will help provide more accurate information on the makeup of RNA.

In Justen’s own words, “Research has made me a persevering person.  It showed me that I should never give up.  Research is not an easy thing.  You have to be ready to fail, and learn from those failures.” Through his persistence in research, Justen hopes to make a scientific breakthrough that will improve the study of genetic composition.
