This was our second day of collecting on our Florida trip, and it turned out to be a bit disappointing. It seems that we arrived during a particularly dry spell at the park. While we were treated to some beautiful views (the view behind the park headquarters looking over the Apalachicola River is spectacular) and some interesting wildlife (e.g. some curious lizards and voracious crab spiders). The trails we walked were mainly surrounded by somewhat sparse pine with grassy and shrubby undergrowth. There is a new species of Sarcophagidae that was recently described from this location that we were hoping to find (Blaesoxipha torreya Pape), but the flies were not cooperating. It represented our first try at setting out a carrion bated trap to attract flies, but a thunderstorm moving in cut our collecting short. |
