Section 4.3 Worksheet:

Assigned problems: Exercises pp. 247-249, #8, 18, 21, 36, 46, 49 (due Thursday).

  1. How would you describe concavity?

  2. What bearing does the second derivative have on concavity?

  3. Use the two simplest quadrative (``parabolic'') functions, tex2html_wrap_inline103 and tex2html_wrap_inline105 , to demonstrate the first and second derivative tests.

  4. Notice the ``charts'' used to encapsulate the derivative information, and show its bearing on the shape of the graph (e.g. p. 241, p. 246). What information is conveyed in these charts? Is there other useful information which one might include?
