- Last time: the real numbers are
not countable, since they cannot be put into one-to-one correspondence
with the natural numbers.
- Today:
-
- Reminder: Project Assignment 2 (due Friday): let me know what your
topic is, and some preliminary details about what your poster
will cover.
- Project idea: Mathematics and Art. Ivars Peterson
(who will be visiting our class at the end of this month) has a book
out on Infinity (Fragments of Infinity), which is essentially
about Mathematics and Art. I'm sure that he would love to talk to you about it!
- An infinity of infinities:
- Sets and subsets
- Power sets
- Cantor's proof that the power set has larger size (cardinality)
than the set itself (recycling his proof that the reals are
bigger than the naturals!).
- Let's look at the problems:
- Next time: The geometry of
infinity
