Review of Material to be covered on the final
Heart of Mathematics
Details:
The test will consist of a variety of problems, some short answer, some
calculations, perhaps even an essay. It will cover material that we have
examined in class. About half of the test will cover material since the
previous test, and the other half will cover material from the early going.
Strategy:
- Since I like to give partial credit, you should attempt all problems (even
if you cannot solve them).
- Look over your homework - the mindscapes - and check that you can do those
sorts of problems. A few will be modeled on your homework.
- As I said, I can't get too tricky, because we don't have much time. But be
prepared for a few little twists and turns.
Subject Matter:
- There will be a fair number of problems testing content, from the reading
or from class: e.g.
- What is the moebius band?
- What is the relationship between frequencies of events and
probabilities of events?
Note: even if we did not discuss something at length in class, you are
still responsible for it on the test! The reading was considered an essential
part of the course.
- Some types of problems you might anticipate:
- Projections of higher dimensional objects in lower dimensional
spaces.
- Understand how bias may enter into a study.
- Given a rule, draw the fractal.
- Relationships between edges, vertices, and faces.
- You might have to write a short essay about numbers, for example.
- You should know your definitions: e.g.
- What are the Platonic solids?
- How is the golden rectangle defined?
- What is a Klein bottle?
- What questions do you have?
