Section 8.2 Worksheet:
Assigned problems: Exercises pp. 516-517, #2, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16, 26, 28, 49, 52, 54, 56, 57, 61
(due Monday, 9/8).
-
Make a list of several of the standard trig identities that are used in this
section, and that you believe that you've encountered before.
-
What integration techniques are used to obtain the solutions to the examples in
this section?
-
Answer the question posed in figure 1, p. 511.
-
Which trig identity is really the Pythagorean theorem in trig form? (The answer
to this is not explicitly given in the section!)
Notes:
-
This section might be considered ``archaic'' by some: it's full of techniques
which we really don't need much anymore, since, if we're confronted by some
hairy integral of this class we would be able to get the solution most easily
by asking your TI calculator to solve it...!
One of the important lessons of this section is the usefulness of trigonometric
identities, many of which you've undoubtably forgotten. Take this opportunity
to remember the relationship between tan, sec, sin, and cos, etc., and their
derivatives.
