Section 2.5 Worksheet:

Assigned problems: Exercises pp. 112-114, #4-8, 13, 38, 40, 45, 48, 59 (due Monday)

  1. Can you give a simple definition of continuity in words?

  2. Name three kinds of discontinuities.

  3. What kinds or classes of functions are guaranteed to be continuous?

  4. Explain (perhaps with help of a diagram) the Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT).

  5. Give two examples of real-world phenomena which are by their nature continuous functions of their arguments.

Notes:

  1. Once again the theorems suggest that properties we'd like continuity to possess are true: e.g., the sum of two continuous functions is continuous; the composition of continuous functions is continuous.
  2. The greatest integer function is known on your calculator as the floor function.
