Monday 8/22 Welcome!
  • Read the chapter "Welcome" (pages ix-xii) and Section 1.1; start stories #1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 from Section 1.1.
    You may read Section 1.2 (hints), but do not read 1.3 (solutions)!

  • Have a look at the book, and choose THREE sections or topics (other than chapter 1) that you would like to cover. Write a paragraph explaining what interests you about each section. You may also include topics which are NOT in the book, but which interest you, and which you would like to investigate.

Wednesday 8/24 Work on "Fun and Games"
  • Assignment (for next time): finish your stories (you may now peek at section 1.3, if you must!).
  • Read Section 1.4, #2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 14 for discussion. This assignment will be handed in: write up solutions for each (or at least progress, if you can't solve them!). What did you try? What worked? Etc. Be verbose! This will be handed in on Wednesday, 9/7.
Monday 8/29 More "Fun and Games" Read section 2.1 for discussion, and consider Mindscapes I.2, I.3; II.6, II.7, II.8; II.12; II.14. These problems will be handed in Wednesday, 9/14. Again, make sure that you write them up well! I'm looking for complete sentences, good spelling, paragraphs, etc.
Wed8/31 Section 2.1 Read 2.2 for next time; bring an artichoke, pinecone, dandelion, pineapple, or something that illustrates Fibonacci numbers to class to share. Do problems I.1; II.6, 9, 18, 21; III.28, to be handed in Monday, 9/19.
