- Announcements:
- Your first homework assignment (fun and games) returned.
- Your grade is out of 10.
- Some of you did problems from the wrong section, or the
wrong problem numbers. Be careful! Read carefully!
- Some of you didn't type your solutions. Follow instructions!
- Watch your writing. Be careful about spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Some nice solns for 2, 5, and
8. I didn't get any really clean solutions for 9 and
14.
- Your next assignment to be graded, for the estimation unit, is due
this in Friday, 9/12. For this assignment, you don't need to type up
your work. But please -- be neat and clean. Also be expansive! Don't
write down a few words, in incomplete sentences. You should write up
your solutions well. Don't give me inferior work and expect
superior grades....
- For Wednesday, the beginning of our "Number systems" unit, read this short description of bases, including "Base Eight" (here's a local copy).
- What are some of the fundamental mathematical elements of an estimate?
- Collection of (quality) Data
- Approximation using geometrical objects.
- Wise use of units and unit conversion
- Computation (putting it all together)
- Bounds, where possible (that is, capturing the true value between two
values)
- Sometimes it pays to be rough! (underestimate,
overestimate, round)
- Problems to consider (exercises in estimation):
- Together: There will be fifty-seven people at your picnic -- how
much potato salad do you need? (How do we collect quality data)
- In small groups: How many ordinary dice would it take to fill this
classroom?
- Together: Do you have a temporal twin (someone who was born on the
same day as you, and will die on the same day)?
- Is there anyone who obviously does?
- Is there anyone who obviously doesn't?
(Remember the pigeonhole principle!)
