Syllabus for MAT227, Fall 2010

INSTRUCTOR: Andy Long. Office: ST 328; phone: 572-5794; email: longa@nku.edu

MEETING TIME/PLACE (3 credit hours): MW, 7:45-9:00/ST 247

OFFICE HOURS: TR, 9:30-10:45, and 12:30-1:30; MW, 4:45-6:00. I am also available by appointment, and at random when approached with a smile.

EXPECTED BACKGROUND: C- or better in MAT 128 (or MAT 129 or MAT 120 or MAT 121). If you have doubts or concerns about your background, please see me as soon as possible.

TEXT: Calculus by Jon Rogawski. We will cover most of the material in Sections 5.1-5.6, 6.1-6.3, 7.1-7.3, 7.7, 7.8, 8.2, 9.1, 10.1, 12.1-12.4. You have several options in purchasing a textbook. Calculus covers both single and multivariable calculus (which means you could use this text for Mat 228 and MAT 329, too) and is available in paper (ISBN 1-4292-1072-9), cloth (1-4292-1066-4). Single Variable Calculus is available in paper (ISBN-13: 978-1-429-21071-3) and contains only chapters 1-12 of Calculus. Both of these versions can be purchased as an ebook: see www.whfreeman.com and click on MATHEMATICS and then click on CALCULUS. All books are in the 1st Edition but try to find a book in the second or third printing. We will be making use of the TI-92 or TI-89 calculators (if you do not have one of these, you will need to obtain one).

STUDENT SOLUTIONS MANUAL: I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of the Student Solutions Manual Single Variable Calculus (ISBN-13: 978-0-7167-9866-8). This manual contains completely worked-out solutions to all odd-numbered exercises within the text. There should be copies in the NKU bookstore or you may purchase an online copy at the website listed above.

GRADING: There will be two exams and a comprehensive final. Homework will be assigned regularly, and you will be assessed over homework in one of several ways:

I will drop several of your worst homework grades. I do not accept late homework -- they'll be considered zeros (and hence presumably dropped).

Your course grade will be determined as follows:

Homeworks 20%
Notebook 5%
Midterm Exams 50%
Final 25%
The tests will be given in class, closed book. Make-up exams will not be given except in extreme circumstances. I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:

<60 60-70 70-71 71-79 79-80 80-81 81-89 89-90 90-91 >91
F D C- C C+ B- B B+ A- A

I do curve, as necessary and as I see fit. The notebooks will be collected at the time of each exam.

ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned or discussed in class. Attendance will be taken, and may be used along with class effort (as measured by participation - asking questions, answering other students' questions, group work, etc.) to resolve borderline grades.

CALCULUS LAB: A Calculus Lab, run by the Mathematics Dept. and staffed by upper level students, will provide tutoring to Calculus students in ST 343. Hours: TBA

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class (with a grade of W) is November 1, 2010. After that day it is not usually permitted.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: are on-line.
