CATALOG DESCRIPTION: MAT 228 Calculus C (3,0,3) Includes material covered in the last third of the MAT 129-MAT 229 sequence. Approximate integrals, improper integrals, infinite sequences and series, tests for convergence and divergence, power series, Taylor and Maclaurin series with applications; introduction of vectors and Geometry of space; dot product and cross product. Credit is not given for both MAT 228 and MAT 229. PREREQ: C or better in MAT 227.
If you have doubts or concerns about your background, please see me as soon as possible.
TEXT: Calculus, first edition, by Jon Rogawski. We will cover material from chapters 8, 9, 11, and 13, making use of the TI-92 or TI-89 calculators (or the like -- if you do not have one of these, you will need to obtain one).
GRADING: There will be two exams and a comprehensive final. Homework will be assigned regularly, and some brief quizzes will be administered to check that you're doing the reading in advance of class.
Your course grade will be determined as follows:
Quizzes | 10% |
Homework | 30% |
Two Exams | 40% |
Final | 20% |
I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:
<60 | 60-70 | 70-71 | 71-79 | 79-80 | 80-81 | 81-89 | 89-90 | 90-91 | >91 |
F | D | C- | C | C+ | B- | B | B+ | A- | A |
The tests will be given in class. All will be closed book. Make-up exams will not be given except in extreme circumstances. If I excuse a student from an exam (again, for some extreme reason), the student's course grade will be calculated based on the rest of the semester's work.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned regularly. You should expect to do a lot of homework, and to do it well, in order to succeed in this course. You should also expect to go to the board occasionally: we will often spend class time at the board, attempting problems together.
ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned or discussed in class. Attendance will be taken, and may be used along with class effort (as measured by participation - asking questions, answering other students' questions, group work, etc.) to resolve borderline grades.
WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class with a "W" is 11/2. After that day it is not usually permitted.
