• Last time we were finishing up section 8.2:
  • Section 8.2 highlights: Finite State Machines: We looked at two more things: building FSMs for recognition, and machine minimization.

• Today I want to look at an example, that spans the course, and then just take a peek at the topics we've covered since the last exam. The example is from Lewis Carroll:
  1. Babies are illogical
  2. Illogical persons are despised
  3. Nobody is despised who can manage a crocodile

  What can we conclude? First of all, from the Once and Future King: all that is not expressly forbidden is mandatory!

  In particular, can babies manage crocodiles?

  Solution:

  • Propositional and Predicate logic
  • A Truth Table (of logically consistent possibilities)
  • Using Venn Diagrams
  • Carroll's method (which is essentially the Karnaugh map)
