Today:
- Welcome!
- Announcements
- Thanks for signing up! I'm glad that you're here.
- Introductions (4x6 cards)
- Name
- Where are you from?
- Something special about yourself.
- Some course details:
- The course website will be useful:
http://www.nku.edu/~longa/classes/mat194
- Syllabus (logistics, etc.)
-
Assignments will be available on the
website. Keep checking on those. For next time:
- Read the section on Infinity (p. 28) for discussion next time (1/20).
- Take a look at the topics in the text: pick the one that grabs your
interest the most for next time. We'll "vote" to choose some of the other
topics we consider during the semester.
- The Text:
- 50 Mathematical Ideas You Really Need to Know (Tony
Crilly, Quercus Publishing Plc) will allow us to enjoy some real mathematics while we're learning about the mathematical sciences.
- You should do any reading in advance of our discussion of
each section in class.
- Grading: as this course is pass/fail, the grade for the course
will be determined by your presence, your active participation, your
attendance at talks, as well as by your final poster project. Make it
easy on yourself, and conscientiously attend.
- Questions?
- Talks and events:
- When you attend an event, you'll want to bring along your evaluation form.
- You will want to write well on this form. You may want to write a rough draft, and then submit the more polished version.
- Consider attending this Friday's seminar, featuring department chair Steve
Wilkinson (3:00 in ST 111). Here's his blurb.
- We'll practice today on an advanced math major, Grayson Rodriguez, who will be accompanying me to San Francisco tomorrow to present his research on Cicada-killing Wasps.
