Today:
- Announcements
- Does anyone have any "talk reports" to hand in?
- You have a homework due today.
- You have a new (reading) assignment, as well, for discussion next time. It's a relatively difficult reading. Please give it a shot, however. It's called "A Sketch of the Cultural Career of Mathematics".
- Next week we will be discussing the reading I've assigned.
- Talks and events coming up:
- Next week, Sept. 19th and 20th, we have Miami University's
42nd
Annual Mathematics Conference on Optimization, September 19th and
20th. You can discharge three of your talks by attending this
conference.. If you're
interested in that, please let me know.
- This is another opportunity in Louisville at the same time (details?).
- Any other opportunities that you've heard of?
- Today I will be previewing a talk that I am giving this
afternoon. The talk is targeted to an audience of fellow faculty
members (mostly in STEM disciplines), so I want you to do, or be aware
of, the following:
- Imagine that you are a faculty member in your favorite discipline.
- The seminar focus is on "Transdisciplinarity", which
"connotes a research strategy that crosses many disciplinary
boundaries to create a holistic approach."
- The title is "Planetary Emergency: the Carbon Crisis
Across the Curriculum".
- Afterwards I want you to criticize my talk. Here are some ways
that you might help:
- The talk is only supposed to be 20 minutes long. I will
run over. Please suggest ways to shorten it.
- What grabbed you? What didn't?
- What is my objective in presenting this talk?
