Syllabus for MAT229, Fall 2014

MEETING TIME/PLACE (5 credit hours): MEP 325, MW 9:00-9:50; TR 9:25-10:40.

OFFICE HOURS: MW, 10:00-11:50; TR, 11:00-12:00 and 3:00-4:00. I am also available by appointment, and at random when approached with a smile.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Calculus of exponential, logarithmic, and inverse functions; techniques of integration; arc length; calculus of parametric equations and polar curves; infinite sequences and series; introduction of vectors and geometry of space; dot product and cross product. Credit is not given for both MAT 229 and MAT 228. PREREQ: C- or better in MAT 129 or MAT 227.

TEXT: Calculus 7E, by James Stewart. We will cover much of the material in chapters 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12 (and a smidgen of 8 and 9). We will be making use of the software package Mathematica, which you can obtain free of charge as an NKU student.

SOLUTIONS MANUALS: You may want to purchase a copy of the Student Solutions Manual. I have a copy of the Instructor's Solutions Manual in my office, and you can come by to check it out for short periods of time, when I'm there (e.g. during office hours). You are free to check out solutions to homework problems, etc. What I want you doing, more than anything, is actually attempting the problems. If you get too frustrated with a problem, it's sometimes nice to see the solution so that your mind can rest.

GRADING: There will be three exams and a comprehensive final. Homework will be assigned regularly, and you will be assessed over homework in one of several ways:

I will drop several of your worst homework grades. I do not accept late homework -- they are considered zeros (and hence will presumably be dropped, if you don't have too many of them!).

Your course grade will be determined as follows:

Homeworks 20%
Exams 60%
Final 20%
The tests will be given in class, closed book. Make-up exams will not be given except in extreme circumstances. I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:

I do curve, as as I see necessary and fit.

ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned or discussed in class. Attendance will be taken, and may be used along with class effort (as measured by participation - asking questions, answering other students' questions, group work, etc.) to resolve borderline grades.

CALCULUS LAB: A Calculus Lab, run by the Mathematics Department out of MEP457 and staffed by our upper level students, provides free tutoring to Calculus students in our department. Hours: TBA. Visit soon, and often!

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class is October 27th, 2014. After that day it is not usually permitted.
