MAT 329: Fall 2015

SYLLABUS

INSTRUCTOR: Andy Long. Office: MEP 443; phone: 572-5794; email: longa@nku.edu

MEETING TIME/PLACE: MEP314: 12:15-1:30 TR, 12:00-12:50 F.

EXPECTED BACKGROUND: MAT 229, or equivalent. If you have doubts or concerns about your background, please see me as soon as possible.

TEXT: Calculus: 7E, by James Stewart. Topics include multivariate functions, partial derivatives, integration techniques for multivariate functions, and vector calculus. We will cover much of chapters 14-16 (14.1-14.7; 15.1-15.4 and 15.7-15.9; 16.1-16.6), making use of Mathematica (and you may use TI and other graphing calculators), as well as additional software.

GRADING: There will be two tests and a final over the course of the term. Each homework assignment will be handed in, and generally two homework problems will be graded (selected at random). In addition, we will have a short quiz each Friday over any reading assigned that week. Please do the reading! Your course grade will be determined as follows:

Homework: 25%
Quizzes: 10%
Two Tests: 40%
Final: 25%

The tests will be given in class, closed book. Make-up exams will not usually be given. If I excuse a student from an exam (for some extreme reason), the student's course grade will be calculated based on the rest of the semester's work.

I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:

<60 60-70 70-71 71-79 79-80 80-81 81-89 89-90 90-91 >91
F D C- C C+ B- B B+ A- A

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned often. Usually class will begin with a discussion of previous assignments, with students answering their peers' questions. You should expect to do a lot of homework, and to do it regularly, in order to do well in the course. You should also prepare to help in class by going to the board and presenting answers to other students' questions.

ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned or discussed in class. Attendance will be taken, and may be used along with class effort (as measured by participation - asking questions, answering other students' questions, group work, etc.) to resolve borderline grades.

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class with a grade of W is October 26th. After that day it is not usually permitted.

OFFICE HOURS: MW 10:00-11:00, 12:00-1:00;TR 10:00-12:00; F 10:00-12:00. I am also available by appointment, and at random when approached with a smile.
