• Today we welcome Prof. Dan McGee, Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for Mathematics, to talk about "Math, Education, and Society".

  • There's a STEM pizza supper tonight: the monthly STEM Pizza Supper is Wednesday, March 28 from 6pm-7pm in GH230.

  • There's the Econ competition (April 7th, midnight to midnight); talk to Dakota or Matt if interested.

  • The KYMAA (Kentucky Mathematical Association of America) will is holding its spring meeting April 6-7, 2018 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY.

  • The Celebration of Student Research is also coming up in April -- the 10th and 11th. There are opportunities to visit talks, or the big poster session.

I've asked Prof. McGee to talk about "Math, Education, and Society". I'd thought about adding "Governance" to that, too, because I'm sure that he has learned quite a lot about that in his five years at the center.

Prof. McGee provided us with four discussion questions, and he hopes that this will, indeed, be a discussion!

1. What does society expect mathematics teachers to prepare us to do?
2. What unique opportunities do mathematics teachers have in the development of societal thinkers?
3. How can mathematics teachers develop non-content-specific skills while teaching content?
4. Your help: KCM is tasked with creating a system to produce ongoing p-20 development of content and workforce skills in students. How can we do this?
