MAT194: Assignments

Day Date Activity Assignment
Wed1/16 Welcome: Fun and Games Read A Mathematician's Lament, by Paul Lockhart. We will be discussing it next time (and starting class with a quiz over it).
Wed1/23 Meet and Greet. Discuss "Lockhart's Lament" Easy in-class quiz over Lockhart -- just to see if you read it!

Your assignment for next time (1/30): do one of the following two:

  • Type up a two-page dialogue of your own, using Lockhart's characters. Insert an experience of your own, to bolster the claim of one or the other. (Try your hardest to see the "other side"'s point of view, however.)

  • Create your own version of "the nightmare": Lockhart turns music and painting into nightmares, and you might make a similar nightmare out of another beautiful calling. How could an educational system take the fun out of your favorite discipline?
