- In two weeks we're going to be participating in the Kentucky MAA
(Mathematical Association of America) section meetings (rather than
having a common set of readings). I'll be signing you all up for the
virtual conference, and will expect you to "go" to a pair of talks
(Friday and Saturday -- there will several, at different times, to
choose from), and report on them. If you have any conflicts that
weekend (the 26th and 27th) please let me know.
- Our sixth reading concerned beauty. Our judge/summarizers for the Beautiful
Mathematics/Beautiful Mathematicians discussion were
- Blake (captain)
- Nevaeh
- Chelsea
- Octavia
and their
selections can be found here, on our wiki. I think that
they've done a nice job of featuring some of their
favorites. Well done, group!
-
This week's summarizers are going to have their work cut out
for them. The "Exploding dots!" of James Tanton seemed to get
people's attention. Lots of very interesting stories, choices
of (and even original!) poetry, delicious chocolate, and
comments about interesting experiences with puzzling and
problematic representations of mathematics.
But I'm sure that these folks will give it the ol' college
try. So our group this time (selected from those few who have
done only one summary) is
- Amber (captain)
- John
- Austin
- Justin
I will look to the captain to shepherd this group. You will
have to play this role at most once.
I'll be sending out an email, putting you all in contact with
each other.
- We have an office hour zoom at 9:00 on
Wednesdays, if anyone in that group (or anyone else!) needs a hand
with anything.
- This week we're going to keep it lively: I'd hoped to keep this one for
a later week, but I'd forgotten something important about this
particular week: happy $\pi$-Day this Sunday! More treats, as we
investigate the mathemusician Vi Hart.
I'm going to send you straight to our discussion
on Canvas, for a little of my history with Vi. I'm hoping that you'll
enjoy the four short videos I've picked out for you, and some more
somewhat personal and autobiographical questions.
- As usual, please respond using the two-phased thing:
- Your initial comments are due by Sunday night (3/14 -- $\pi$-Day!).
- Then respond to other's comments by Tuesday (3/16) at Midnight.
Santa's getting lazy, and tired of reporting. Let me just say "Please
keep up the good work!"
