Syllabus for MAT229, Spring 2021

INSTRUCTOR: Andy Long. Office: MEP 443; phone: 572-5794; email: longa@nku.edu (and the best way to get ahold of me).

MEETING TIME/PLACE (5 credit hours): asynchronous "lecture"; Lab day: MP 306, TR 1:40-2:55 (you'll be assigned to either Tuesday or Thursday); you may Zoom in to a computer lab as well. Expect to spend another 3 "class hours" on material per week.

"OFFICE HOURS" (by Zoom, although you might arrange a face-to-face if necessary): M, 9-10am; T, 11:00-noon; R, 12:30-1:30; and F, 10-11. These office hours are just for you all (my other classes will have other "office hours"). I'm often available for a short Zoom at the drop of a hat: email me.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Calculus of exponential, logarithmic, and inverse functions; techniques of integration; arc length; calculus of parametric equations and polar curves; infinite sequences and series; introduction of vectors and geometry of space; dot product and cross product. Credit is not given for both MAT 229 and MAT 228. PREREQ: C- or better in MAT 129 or MAT 227.

TEXT/MATERIALS: There is no required textbook (although course content will align roughly with Calculus 8, by James Stewart). We will be making extensive use of the software package Mathematica, which you can obtain free-of-charge as an NKU student (get your copy here; follow the directions for "Student Download"); in addition, we will be using a free on-line homework system called IMath -- sign up soon:

GRADING: There will be four exams and a comprehensive final (which will probably be given during your lab's final slot, probably in-person, assuming that Covid-precautions allow; there will be a component for which Mathematica will be encouraged, and a component for which you will just use your brain!:) Homework will be assigned regularly, and you will be assessed over homework in one of two ways (either on-line or by hand). I will drop several of your worst homework grades, and that will be true for each type of homework (including labs). I do not accept late homework (except for IMath homework) -- they are considered zeros (and hence will presumably be dropped as your lowest grades).

Your course grade will be determined as follows:

Homeworks/Weekly Assignments/Labs 30%
Exams 50%
Final 20%
The tests will be given via the Lockdown browser. Make-up exams will not be given except in extreme circumstances. I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:

<60 60-70 70-71 71-79 79-80 80-81 81-89 89-90 90-91 >91
F D C- C C+ B- B B+ A- A

I do generally curve exams, as as I see necessary and fit.

ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned for class. "Attendance" (as measured by on-line participation in on-line discussions, as well as labs) may be used to resolve borderline grades.

CALCULUS TUTORING: A Calculus Lab, run by the Mathematics Department out of MEP457 and staffed by our upper level students, provides free tutoring to Calculus students in our department. These will be offered by Zoom this semester. Free calculus help is available!

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class with a "W" is Monday, March 22th, 2021. After that day it is not usually permitted.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: are on-line.
