MAT385-001 - Discrete Math - Spring, 2021

Attitude: your best friend, or worst enemy

INSTRUCTOR: Andy Long. Office: MEP 443; phone: 572-5794; email: longa@nku.edu

MEETING TIME/PLACE: asynchronous; materials will be "released" on Tuesdays and Fridays, by 8:00 am.

EXPECTED BACKGROUND: C- or better in the calc II series (MAT 228 or MAT 229).

TEXT: Mathematical Structures for Computer Science, 7th Ed., J. L. Gersting.

GRADING: There will be three exams, a project, and a comprehensive final. Homework will be assigned regularly and submitted on Canvas for grading. Your course grade will be determined as follows:

Homework: 25%
Project: 10%
Three Exams 45%
Comprehensive Final 20%
Exams will be given in Canvas using a Lockdown browser. The dates are
DateDayActivity
2/5-2/6Exam 1Your exam will be taken via Lockdown Browser
3/5-3/6Exam 2Your exam will be taken via Lockdown Browser
4/9-4/10Exam 3Your exam will be taken via Lockdown Browser
You may be allowed a few notes, as I will discuss before each exam. Make-up exams will be given only under extreme circumstances.

I use the standard grading scale, with a small buffer zone for the assignment of plus/minus grades:

<60 60-70 70-71 71-79 79-80 80-81 81-89 89-90 90-91 >91
F D C- C C+ B- B B+ A- A

I do curve, as necessary and as I see fit.

PROJECT: The project will be something fun that you choose to do, outside of what we do in class. It will be partly graded by your peers. More on that as we go along, although you can check out some old projects on our wiki. I'll be making a page for each of you, and signing you up for the wiki.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned regularly. You should expect to do a lot of homework in order to do well in the course. Each homework assignment will be handed in on Canvas, as a pdf, generally two class periods after it is assigned, so that a few homework problems (chosen at random) may be graded. Hence, exercises assigned on a Tuesday would generally be due a week later on the next Tuesday (barring holidays, etc.)

I will drop several of your worst homework grades. I do not accept late homework -- they are considered zeros (and hence will presumably be dropped, if you don't have too many of them!).

ATTENDANCE: The student is responsible for all material assigned for class. "Attendance" (as measured by on-line participation in discussions, visits to virtual office hours, emailed questions, etc.) may be used to resolve borderline grades.

WITHDRAWAL: The last day to withdraw from any class is March 22, 2021. After that day it is not usually permitted.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: are on-line (see the course homepage)

OFFICE HOURS: (by zoom): Tuesday 4:30-5:30pm, Wednesday 2-3pm, and Friday 9:00am. These hours are just for your class. I am also available by appointment, if those hours won't work -- just email me.
