Target Training Heart Rate

Problem 4- Determine the reserve heart rate given the resting
heart rate and training goal.

Lance Armstrong has a resting heart rate of 32 bpm. When he won the 2005 Tour de France, he was 33 years old. According to the Karvonen formula, what was Armstrong's reserve heart rate when he won the 2005 Tour de France? What was his target heart rate when he trained at 90%? Round your answers to the nearest beat per minute (bpm).

Recall that the maximum heart rate (HRmax) is computed as,

HRmax = 220 − A,

the reserve heart rate (HRrsv) is computed as,

HRrsv = HRmaxHRrest,

and the target heart rate (HRtarg) is computed as,

HRtarg = p · HRrsv + HRrest.

HRrsv = 187 bpm, HRtarg = 200 bpm
HRrsv = 155 bpm, HRtarg = 172 bpm
