Exercises

These exercises review some basic graphing skills that will be used in this chapter and throughout the course. Each of these requires a grid like that shown at the right. Start each exercise by making such a grid on your paper — or click on the image at the right to get a PDF file from which you can print four such grids. Two copies will be enough for all eight exercises.

  1. Plot the points `text[(]-1,1text[)]` and `text[(]1,-2text[)] text(.)` Draw a line through these points.

  2. Plot the points `text[(]-0.5,2text[)]`, `text[(]0.5,0text[)]`, and `text[(]1.5,-2text[)] text(.)` How many lines can you draw through pairs of these points?

  3. Draw a line through the origin and the point `text[(]-1,-2text[)] text(.)` Then draw a line through the origin perpendicular to the first line.

  4. Plot the points `text[(]-2,-1.5text[)]`, `text[(]1,-0.5text[)]`, and one other so that the three points are vertices of a right triangle. Draw the triangle.

  5. Draw a line through the origin with slope `1//3`. Find an equation for your line.

  6. Draw a line with slope `-3//2` through the point `text[(]-1,0.5text[)]`. Find an equation for your line.

  7. Draw a line with slope `-1`. Find an equation for your line.

  8. Draw a line through the points `text[(]-1.5,-2text[)]` and `text[(]1,0.5text[)]`. Find an equation for your line.
