There seems to be a positive relationship between the number of fouls committed and the number of points scored. That is, “more points” and “more fouls” seem to go together — an increasing trend as you move from left to right. It looks like a player with 75 fouls might have around 250 points. However, we would not expect one variable to be a reliable predictor of the other. We certainly do not expect either points or fouls to cause the other. It is possible that both are related to the number of minutes played — or perhaps they are both related to a player's aggressiveness. In particular, it would not be a sensible strategy to order a player to foul more in order to score more.
