Chapter 4
Differential Calculus and Its Uses
4.7 The General Power Rule
Section Summary
In this section, we have established the General Power Rule
The formula is correct throughout the domain of the function `x^(r-1)`. For positive integer values of `r` the formula is correct for all values of `x`. For negative integer values of `r` the domain consists of all `x` except zero. For other rational and all irrational values of `r,` the `r`-th power function is defined for positive numbers `x`, and the General Power Rule works for these functions as well.
