I'd hoped to start graphs this week, but Wednesday's weather got in the way. We'll start graphs after the break. Please do the reading: the three sections assigned illustrate the use of graphs in three different situations.
Any questions about Fibonacci number decomposition and Fibonacci Nim? The former is how you win at the latter!
Fibonacci Numbers and Nature:
- Let's look at some objects from nature: a pine cone, and an ocotillo skeleton
- dandelions (Here's a scanned dandelion)
- Spirals in daisies:
- Similar spirals appear in artichokes, pineapples, etc.
Let's see why Fibonacci relate to spirals, by constructing what I call the "Fibonacci Spiral".
Then I'll have you create a spiral of your own as a homework assignment.
We might try using this image of a staircase, or the Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz....
