To begin with, I went to the voting
poll at the V.F.W in Southgate, KY. I was there approximately from 1:30P.M. to
2:00 P.M. It was a cold day in Campbell County but I was determined to obtain
some results of the election. The day started off fast but ended slow. I was
only able to approach fourteen voters. Of these fourteen, twelve of them were
willing to participate in the class project. The first few people were very
nice and interested in what I was doing. I politely introduced myself and asked
if I could have a moment of their time. I asked them to show me through the box
instead of asking them who they voted for.
I gave them two names, Jack Conway or Rand Paul, and then they put them
in the box so I could gather the statistics.
In addition, there was a Vietnam veteran that
was not interested in what I was doing. He completely blew me off and walked
away. I tried to be as open and polite as possible, but he refused to say one word
or give me any attention. On the other hand, there was a male that approached
me and asked what I was doing. I told him I was from NKU and that I was trying
to gather statistics on the election. He got kind of angry and said this was
illegal. He said I was invading the public’s privacy and influencing the
results of the votes. I thought he was
going to fight me. He started yelling in my face and saying this was
un-American. I kept calm and acted like I walked away. After he left, I
returned and continued my quest for the answer, Jack Conway or Rand Paul. The
next groups of voters that I approached were completely willing to participate
and thought it was an excellent idea for a class project. They put their slips of paper in my ballot
box and were willing to have a friendly conversation with me about school. After twenty minutes, the action died down and
no more voters came out of the V.F.W.
After an interesting but fun 30 min, eight voted for Jack Conway and six voted for Rand Paul. Overall, I had a successful day and had insightful talks with the voters. Of the 14, twelve were willing to participate in the class project. I had a good time getting to know people and understand their thoughts behind the election. About four of them told their view on politics and shared some personal information with me. In the end, I had a good time and got more out of it than I thought I would.
