  1. Please read Section 1.1 in our text, and
  2. carry out Preview Activity 1.1.1 (bring your work to class).
  3. You will also want to read the authors' "Note to Students" as well. It contains important tips and ideas, including links to on-line videos aligned with the text.

Homework problems from section 1.1: #1-7 (these problems will form the basis of your quiz on Friday of next week; although the three forms of linear (affine) equations will also be covered).

Fri1/12 Day 3: Section 1.1 No quiz! Please read Section 1.2 for next time (Wednesday); do HW problems #1-7. We will wrap up section 1.1.
Mon1/15 Day off: MLK Day
Wed1/17 Day 4: Sections 1.1 Read Section 1.2, and do exercises #1-7 for homework problems.
Fri1/19 Day 5: snow day
Mon1/22 Day 6: Section 1.2 and Quiz Please read Section 1.3, and do exercises #1-7 for homework problems. (Always 1-7! I like you to do the easily activated ones, and then try one or two that require a little more thought....)
Wed1/24 Day 7: Finish your worksheet(s) in preparation for the quiz and for class next time.
Fri1/26 Day 8: More on Section 1.3: derivative at a point
Mon1/29 Day 9: Read Section 1.4: The derivative function, and do exercises #1-6, 8, 9
Wed1/31 Day 10: Prepare for exam; I really like this exercise, referenced in the text (source). Fun and challenging!

You should master this! Consider it a video game, and challenge yourself to become a black belt in this one. It will pay off.

Fri2/2 Day 11: Exam 1
Mon2/5 Day 12: Section 1.4; continued. For next time: read Section 1.5: Interpreting, estimating, and using the derivative, and carry out the preview exercise.

Homework: do exercises 1-6 from Section 1.5.

Wed2/7 Day 13:
Fri2/9 Day 14: For next time: read Section 1.6: the Second Derivative, and carry out the preview exercise.

Mon2/12 Day 15: Section 1.6 Try Section 1.6 exercises #1-7 for homework.
Wed2/14 Day 16: Section 1.6 (cont.) You might try some of these GeoGebra animations, in particular those related to the second derivatives:

For next time:

  1. Read Section 1.7: Limits, Continuity, and Differentiability; come to class with questions, if there are things you don't understand. (We've covered most of this along the way).

  2. Read Section 1.8: The Tangent Line Approximation, and carry out the preview exercise.

Fri2/16 Day 17: Section 1.8 Homework: exercises Section 1.8, #1-5, and 8.
Mon2/19 Day 18: We're going to jump into chapter 2 next time. Please read section 2.1 to prepare, and do the preview exercise. For homework, do problems 1-11.
Wed2/21 Day 19: Please read over Section 2.3: Product and Quotient Rules, just to make sure that you understand them. Do homework problems #1-10, 12.
Fri2/23 Day 20:
Mon2/26 Day 21: Prepare for Exam: coverage from 1.4-2.1, 2.3

Test revisions are due Friday, if you want to get 1/3 of the points you missed back. Remember not to mark on the original exam, and to submit the original with revisions. You only need to revise those on which you missed points -- if you got full credit on a problem, you don't need to revise that!:)
