Wed | 2/7 | Day 9: Section 2.5 |
Beautiful applications of our methods! We'll just try to understand what's
going on here... No new "homework": just read for understanding, and bring
questions!
Please read Section 2.6 for next time. In particular, we will focus on Muller's method. |
Mon | 2/12 | Day 10: Section 2.6 | Homework pp. 93--, #1-5, 6, 8, 11, 13, 14, 16, 22 (use your Muller code), 23 |

Wed | 2/28 | Day 15: Section 3.3 | Please read Chapter 5 over the break. It will form the basis for your first project, which will be to create your own very special computer-drawn signature. We won't cover it in detail, but I'll summarize what you need for this project. |
Mon | 3/4 | Day off: Spring Break
Wed | 3/6 | Day off: Spring Break
Mon | 3/11 | Day 17: Section 3.3: Newton polynomials |
Homework: pp. 129--, #1, 2 (this is really important: I want to see that you
write -- and use -- this code, and comment in your own words); then use your code whenever
possible to do problems 3-11 (doing problems by hand, when asked), and then do
12 (remember the error term, which is given in the section on Lagrange
interpolation -- there is only one interpolating polynomial, so it doesn't
matter the form it is given in!).
If your code prints out the tables as it goes, then you will be able to use the code to check your hand work (or to do your "hand work" for you...:). Due 3/18. |
Wed | 3/13 | Day 18: splines | A bit of splines.... so that you'll be ready to carry out your first project, which is due Friday, 4/5. |
Mon | 3/18 | Day 19: Section 4.1 |
Homework (which we'll start working on together): pp. 140--, #4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9(a-d), 10(a-d), 11, 12, 17
Due 3/25. |
Wed | 3/20 | Day 20: Section 4.2
Mon | 3/25 | Day 21: Section 4.3
Wed | 3/27 | Day 22: Section 4.3 |
Do the following to submit with your exam, from section
4.3, pp. 163-167: #3-5, 11, 12, 18 abfg, 21, 22, 25, 50
For problems 3, 4, 5, and 11, write code that works for an arbitrary function, and then apply the code on those problems. Provide me with a script that allows me to (easily!:) reproduce your results. |
