Martha Johnson

Martha Johnson passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 7, 2015, in the evening at the Wood County Hospital Intensive Care Unit, with the presence of some of her immediate family members. Martha was born March 12, 1926, to William and Bertha (Thomas) Roller on a farm near Dowling, Ohio, north of Bowling Green. On September 29, 1946, she married Melvin Johnson, which was the beginning of a life time partnership. They were childhood school friends but only began their courtship during their senior year in high school. From their marriage came four sons, William (Rachel) Johnson of San Marino, California, John (Flara) Johnson of Powell, OH, Mark (Nancy) Johnson of Upper Sandusky, OH, Paul (Laura) Johnson, Bowling Green, OH.

She has one surviving sister, Patricia Hoiles of Wayne, OH. She was preceded in death by three brothers, George Roller, Jim Roller, and John Roller and two sisters, Margaret (Roller) Dotts, Harriet (Roller) Hilldebrand. She leaves six grandchildren, Greg (Rachael) Johnson, Katherine Johnson, Lewis Johnson, Amy Johnson, Jessica Johnson, and Susan Johnson.

Martha graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1944. After high school, she worked four years at the A & P (Atlantic and Pacific) Grocery Store in Bowling Green. Two months after leaving A & P, she had her first son, becoming a full-time homemaker. She also worked with her husband, Melvin, in the family construction business, Melvin Johnson Builders, in many capacities.

She delivered Wheeled Meals from the Wood County Hospital for many years. She also worked for the Wood County Board of Elections. Martha and her husband enjoyed nature very much, having an area of land where they planted trees, grasses, and flowers for wildlife, which they called, "The Habitat." They enjoyed spending time there.

Martha was active in her church all of her life, teaching Sunday school, participating in the women's groups, organizing bereavement dinners for families of the church. She loved her church. Her travels with her husband, Melvin and family to Europe were treasured memories including visits to the places where her family ancestors came from.

She loved her family, including relatives and friends. Her friends were family to her with many staying for lunch or dinner for a good meal. No one went hungry when mom was around. She loved so much the value of family. She impacted all of our lives because of it.

Her family wishes to thank the Wood County Hospital, especially the Intensive Care Unit doctors and staff for the wonderful care given to Martha over the past week. Also, the support given by her church, neighbors, friends, the swimming therapy class and her extended family in her final days.

Dunn Funeral Home is handling the services. Visitation will be Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 315 South College Drive, Bowling Green, OH at 2 p.m. with additional visitation before the service from 1-2 p.m. at the church on Sunday, January 11, 2015. Interment will follow the funeral service at New Belleville Ridge Cemetery near Dowling, OH. Those wishing to send an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Mark's Lutheran Church or a charitable organization of their choice.

My thoughts are with the family and just found out today. I will miss her and all her kindness she brought all she met. She will be missed. Robert Dotts

Nothing but fond memories of being at the Johnson house since we were in elementary school. So sad to hear of her passing, your whole family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Paul, it was great to visit this past Labor Day with you & Laura and catch up. Your mom was such a gracious and caring woman and will be missed. God Bless,
