At the end of this lab you should have
Umich students: the easy way to do this is from your "My IFS Home Directory" on the Windows desktop.
In the rest of this exercise, you should save all of your work there.
Umich students: Recall the space issues discussed last week: if you're concerned about disk usage, see me! You can do this lab using any directory, e.g. the C:\Temp directory.
Now it's time to dive into ArcView, with applications to Illinois cancer rate data. This will include
On a personal note, let me mention that I find ArcView a "challenging" piece of software. One thing I mean by that is that if I use it on Monday, and take a day off Tuesday, then I'll have forgotten how to use it by Wednesday: too many buttons, too many windows, too many options! See what you think....
A really fun (okay, just fun!) map projections page. The map at right is a projection of the world onto a 14-faceted "GlobeMap". Another one, more business than fun. I got both of these from this generally useful site. |

Our GIS files are stored in Atlas GIS export (.bna) format. You can retrieve these in just minutes. We batch process format conversion jobs after work hours when our loads are lower, so converting to Arc/Info (.e00) or MapInfo (.mid .mif) format is an overnight process. You will be notified by email where and how to ftp the converted coverage you order."
From: cmb04@health.state.ny.us To: WAPHGIS@u.washington.edu"American FactFinder is a data access and mapping components World Wide Web technology tool for the general public to get quick access to Census information. American FactFinder accesses data from the Decennial Censuses of Population and Housing, the American Community Survey (with updates of the decennial census data collected every year beginning about 2002), and the 1997 Economic Census. One can search Census STF databases, with metadata description, and format the results to create customized tables (or download to spreadsheets), construct reference maps to show boundaries and features for geographic entities, and produce quick thematic maps to reveal geographic patterns in statistical data. There is ongoing discussion as to how the full Decennial microdata files data can be included with confidentiality filters. The main contractor for FactFinder is IBM, with ORACLE handling the database and ESRI the mapping components, respectively."
