Composting in our Garden
Like lots of people, we have a "kitchen garden", and nothing feels more
satisfying than going out to pick your dinner.
Part of gardening is improving (or at least maintaining your soil), while also
getting rid of "waste" in an appropriate fashion.
Composting does both!
In our Garden:
- Composting: Turning citrus peels into soil
- If you have animals that will eat your "refuse", that's
a great way to use your "waste"; otherwise, if it's
biodegradeable, then a compost "pile" is a good way to
go. In Haiti, with temperatures being what they are,
burying compost will quickly turn it into a soil
amendment, which you can use to nourish the next
generation of plants:
- Going in, it looks yummy -- if you're a goat or a fly!
- Coming out, it looks yummy to your plants, to worms,
and to soil microbes:
- Eggplant is an especially beautiful plant:
- Do you know what a pineapple looks
like in the garden? We've got one growing:
- Why not grow your clothes? Thad wanted to plant some cotton
seeds, and they're coming up! Cotton used to be an important
export in Haiti, but I'm not sure that it is anymore.
