Ranquitte Needs an Industry
Ivy Salomon is a missionary who celebrated her 86th birthday in 2006. She's
seen 50 years of Haiti. As the heart and soul of Christian Flights
International, she's got a lot of good ideas about how to improve life there.
A group came through her house, and one of the people in the group asked her
what Ranquitte needs most. Her answers were illuminating:
- First of all, Ranquitte needs better roads.
- Secondly, Ranquitte needs an industry.
The roads were obvious to everyone who took the jerky road in from Pignon to Ranquitte:
Less obvious was the situation for industry. It's harder to see the
unemployment, which was estimated at about 50% in 1987 (http://countrystudies.us/haiti/47.htm),
and which was estimated at about 67% in 2002 (CIA
World Factbook, Haiti).
