Spatial Epidemiology

Topic:

Spatial Compartmental Models

Presenter: Dr. John A. Jacquez

OVERVIEW and OBJECTIVES

In this module we introduce the basics of compartmental modeling, examine some simple models, and indicate how compartmental models may be used in spatial problems.

Goal:

  1. Introduce compartmental systems and compartmental modeling.
  2. Introduce compartmental models of epidemics, including epidemic models that explicitly include geographic spread.

OBJECTIVES: Those who successfully complete the module should

  • Know how to create simple models using Stella, and understand some of the limitations of Stella.
  • Understand the principal modeling issues (mixing, transmission).
  • Understand the basic reproduction number , and its relationship to real public health issues like vaccination and quarantine.
