Your Homepage

Note:The following directions are for those at the University of Michigan, for whom the default homepage directory is a subdirectory of H:\Public from the desktop. If you want to create a home page elsewhere, check with your system administrator about the location of homepage directories on your system.

While we're at it we'll have you create your course home page, which will serve as the repository for your work in this course.

This will be a very simple page: nothing to be frightened of! If you want to get really fancy, then check out the html link in the links section of this lab.

To create a home page, you must create the sub-directory html of H:\Public. Once you've done that, you will have a home page directory.
Now for the page itself. Simply download this compressed archive containing my example Epid624 home page file to your home page directory (e.g. H:\Public\html) and unzip it using WinZip (Use the "Extract" button to extract these files to this same directory).
Now you're ready to try out your course home page: go to your web address (at UMich, this is

http://www.umich.edu/~my_uniqname/epid624/

where you should replace my_uniqname with your uniquename) and see what happens! Let's cross our fingers.... Once you've got that going, you can waste hours and hours making it fancy (see the HTML link in your new home page).
If you see your "Spatial Epidemiology Home Page", then all is well! Now you should edit the file index.html with Notepad (not Word, or other fancy editors!), replacing "your_name_here" with your name, and "your_email_here" with your email address. After saving the file with your changes, reload your home page (to see if the changes have taken effect). You can also make other changes (e.g. when you're done with the image conversion, and the link to snow.jpg works, then you can edit the file to remove those instructions.
A final bell (or is it a whistle?): convert the image snow.gif found in your images directory to snow.jpg using image converter TransImage. Then the jpg link will work from your web page. To save it to your home page directory, you can either click on the link, view the image, and use the "Save" feature of your browser to save it; or you can usually right-click on a link - the image - and get an option to save (e.g. "Save Target As", or "Save Link As") the file to your computer (and remember, save it as snow.jpg in your directory H:\Public\html\epid624\images).
There are links to "data" and "reports", but if you look in them you'll see that there's only a README.txt file in them. You'll soon be putting things in those directories; never fear!

Warning: anything you put into your home page directory can generally be read by the whole world through their web browsers! Be careful what you put in there....
