CHAPTER 21 Network Information Services (NIS and NIS+)
21.1 What is it and what does it do for you?
It allows Network Information Services (NIS) allows networked machines to have a common interface regardless of the workstation that you log into. This service was formerly known as the Yellow Pages, or YP. With NIS you have the same passwd and group files (same uid and gid) and can be placed into the same home directory on each of your machines.
These services are considerably expanded under SunOS 5.X as Network Information Services Plus (NIS+). The Solaris 2 CDROM provides an NIS+ version that will run under SunOS 4.1.X in case you want to mix and match servers.
