As a novice, you may not feel Unix is the most friendly of systems. Well, just as people display their humanity in a variety of ways, Unix displays it friendliness in its own unique ways. One of these is always having detailed and rather complete documenation available at your finger tips (beats a trip down the hall or to the library). While asking a person next to you may be the faster, sometimes they may not know as much as you!
Web based tutorials like this one, or "A Scientist's and Engineer's Guide to Workstations", or "UNIXhelp for Users", are all there to help you if you are on the Web.
Particularly helpful is Unix's online manual. To access this
manual, you use the man command, for example,
> man man man command.
