§ 2.A: Logging In

If you look in the Webterm frame, ou will notice buttons labeled "Connect" and "Disconnect." Use your mouse to press the Connect button. This will connect you to the Unix host.

You should get a welcome message followed by the prompt:

If you are a registered user, you have been given a userid and password. To log in, type your userid and press Return or Enter. If you are not a registered user, you can still read through this tutorial, but will not be able to try out the commands. That being the case, you may want to ask someone you know if you can temporarily get an account on their Unix or Linux machine. (But with all due respect, please do not ask us unless we know you!)

You should type in your userid, and other commands, pretty much exactly as they appear (other than adding extra spaces). In paricular, Unix is case sensitive.

After logging in, you should get the prompt:

Go ahead and type in your password followed by the return key. Notice that your password does not show on the screen. This means someone else can't look over your shoulder and read it, and that you must be careful in your typing.

If you have mistyped your userid or password, the Unix will inform you that you have not logged in correctly and will prompt you to try again. Otherwise you should receive a propmt and be ready to go. (This is typical of Unix, like many domestic partners, it only really speaks to you when something is wrong.) That beign the case, you are logged in and ready to go on to changing your password.
