Getting Your Webpage to Display Graphics Files/Using
WS_FTP
Unlike html files, graphics files (e.g., backgrounds and images,
usually
with file extensions such as ".jpg" and ".gif") cannot be pasted into
your
WWW folder using TeraTermPro. Instead, you need to use a File
Transfer
Protocol (FTP) program. The FTP program we have in LA526 and on
most
systems at NKU is WS_FTP. To add graphics files to your webpage,
you must first modify the original webpage with html code that directs
the browser to display your image. Then you must transfer the
graphics
file to your www folder using WS_FTP.
Modify your webpage so that it displays the graphics file you
wish
to add (background or image).
-
Modify your webpage so that the html file contains the code necessary
to
direct the browser to display your graphic.
-
To add a background image using Composer, click "Format" on the
toolbar,
then "Page Colors and Properties," then "Colors and Backgrounds." Click
the checkbox next to "Use Image," then type in your graphic's filename,
or use the "Choose File" button to locate the graphic you wish to
add. Note: if you use the "Choose File" button, Composer
will
add the location of the file to the filename. Usually, this will
be the A drive on your local system. Remove this reference to
your
A drive from the filename, or your graphic will not be visible to
viewers
at other locations.
-
To add a graphic, choose "Insert" from the toolbar, then "Image."
Enter the graphic file name, or browse for it using the "Choose File"
button.
Note: If you use the "Choose File" button, Composer will add the
location of the file to the filename. Usually, this will be the A
drive on your local system. Remove this reference to your A drive from
the filename, or your graphic will not be visible to viewers at other
locations.
-
Load your new page into your www folder in the usual way using
WS_FTP.
Transfer the graphics file to your www folder.
-
Save to your "A" drive the graphics file you want to use on your
webpage.
-
Transfer your graphics file to your www folder as follows:
-
Open WS_FTP on your local system as follows::
-
Click on "Start," then "Internet," then "WS_FTP."
-
A dialog screen will appear. Enter the following information:
-
If it is not already entered, for Profile name, enter
studenthome.nku.edu
(note: faculty use www.nku.edu)
-
If it is not already entered, for Host name, enter
studenthome.nku.edu
(note: faculty use www.nku.edu)
-
For Username, enter your username on the webserver.
-
For Password, enter your password.
-
Click on "OK."
-
In a few seconds, a new screen will appear. The column on the
left
is the "Local system"; that is, the computer at which you are now
sitting.
The column on the right is the "Remote system"; that is, the webserver
(for students: studenthome.nku.edu; for faculty: www.nku.edu).
-
On the "Local system" column, double click the A drive. The files
located on your disk in drive A should then appear.
-
On the "Remote system" column, double click your WWW folder. The
files in your WWW folder should appear.
-
Below the "Local system" and "Remote system" columns, you are given the
choice between "ASCII," "Binary," and "Auto." "ASCII" is used for
text/html
files only; if you plan to transfer graphics files as well, click
"Binary."
-
Transfer the desired files from the "Local system" to the "Remote
system".
There are two ways to transfer a file from the "Local" system to the
"Remote"
system.
-
Click on the file you would like to transfer once to highlight
it.
Then find the right-arrow button between the "local" and "remote"
columns.
Click on the arrow to transfer the file.
-
OR, double click the file you would like to transfer. It will be moved
from the "local" system to the "remote" system
-
After a few seconds, the graphics filenames should appear in the right
column (the "Remote system").
-
You may now minimize WS_FTP, or click on "Exit" to exit WS_FTP.
Your
graphics file has now been transferred.
Check your page using an internet browser to ensure that your page
is
now displayed as desired.
