Tissues of the Tongue
Common tissue types are reviewed below, using a slide of the human tongue as an example.

A. Epithelial tissue:
This covers the surfaces of of the
body (for example, your skin).
Stained purple in this slide.


B. Nervous tissue:
This is used in sensory organs to detect stimuli like pain, temperature, or flavors. Located here in the taste buds.


C. Connective tissue:
This holds other tissues and organs together. Here, see it between the folds of epithelial tissue, and also between the epithelial and muscle tissues. It is stained pale purple in this slide. Note: blood is also a type of connective tissue.

 

D. Muscle tissue:
This is used for movement. It is stained bright pink in this slide.

** The dark purple tissue intermixed with the muscles is glandular tissue. You aren't required to recognize this.
