The Department of Mathematics and Statistics strives to graduate professionals who are critical thinkers. Developing skills in analysis and design, students learn to be creative problem solvers as they interact with the world around them. Career exploration courses are embedded in our programs to ensure our majors are guided and supported in their exploratory phase. These courses enable students to:

  • explore post-graduation paths available to those with a mathematics/statistics background, including industry positions and graduate programs;
  • meet and network with department alumni through site visits to local companies and graduate programs; and
  • develop job search and interview skills.

The Mathematics major helps students develop logic, analysis, abstract thinking, and problem-solving skills.

This in-demand and versatile skillset equips graduates to excel in numerous fields.

Statistics icon

Statistics

Statistics is the science of reasoning from data, whether those data come from biology, economics, healthcare, sports, psychology, marketing, or other fields.

Statisticians often help search for clues to the solution of a scientific mystery and sometimes keep investigators from being misled by false impressions.

Fun Fact: Data Analytics & Statistics majors can get SAS certified in STA 360, and if they pass the exam the department will reimburse the exam fee!
 

Actuarial Sciences icon

Actuarial Sciences

Actuaries use mathematical and statistical concepts to find ways to quantify risk and understand the financial impact of unlikely events.

These specialized skills are used in the insurance industry to ensure companies are financially stable now and in the future.

Fun Fact: Students can prepare for actuarial exams in MAT 350, and if they pass the exam as a student, the department will reimburse the 75% of the exam cost!
