Notice the 3 layers of the esophagus.
Mucosa
Submucosa
Muscularis
The esophagus has only 3 layers instead of the typical 4 because it lacks a serosa.
This is a slide of the esophagus. Note the dark purple layers from the middle to the top of the slide. This is the mucosa. Can you see the layers of stratified squamous epithelium?
