You have a homework due. You'll be sharing these with your peers
today, however, so don't hand them in until the end of class.
Does anyone have any "talk reports" to hand in?
You have a new assignment:
you should be at work on your final project report.
Talks and events coming up:
CINSAM
STEM connections night, November 19th, 4:15-7:30. This is a
chance to get two talks in. Thane Maynard will make this an
exciting event, I'm sure. Again, if you participate in two
session, you can get two talk credits.
Any other opportunities that you've heard of?
Next time (and the last time you will meet before your project presentations!):
you'll continue working on your projects.
Unfortunately, however, I won't be here that day -- I'll be in
Washington, D.C.
Dan Curtin will stand in for me to run the show on 12/3.
So this is my last time with you before our poster presentations.
I hope that we have achieved some of what was proposed in the syllabus:
Students will improve their ability to read and discuss mathematics and statistics.
Students will improve their ability to actively listen to mathematics and statistics
Students will improve their ability to write about mathematics and statistics.
Students will have a knowledge of the applications of mathematics and statistics to other disciplines
Students will be knowledgeable about the employment opportunities for those in the mathematical sciences.
Students will be acquainted with a wide variety of specialty areas in the mathematical sciences.
Today: we will be working on your projects. You should have two pages with
you today for your homework: a "vision" of your poster, and an elevator
talk.. I'm going to issue you some blank paper to use as you
critique your peers' work (put your name on all your work).
You'll collect feedback from several of your peers:
First stage: spend 3 minutes reviewing each other's posters.
Second stage: spend 3 minutes giving each other your elevator
talks. After each spend 3 minutes with comments about the
elevator talk and the poster.
Then we'll switch and do it again.
At the end of class you will submit your homework from today, with the
attached sheets with your peers' comments.
